A non stop barrage of “collusion” stories abound regarding alleged Russian attempts to influence our election process despite a stunningly underwhelming lack of evidence. Recently, however, we have evidence of interference by the US government in the election process of a sovereign nation and all we have is abject silence by the major news networks and not surprisingly, those Russia-blaming, bent out of shape Hillary supporters. Of course, all the stomping around and marching with pussy hats was never about the sanctity of our election process. This was never been about having the will of the people heard. Never mind that 44% of eligible voters chose “did not to vote,” instead of pulling the trigger for Hillary or Trump. (How the hell aren’t you mad at those people, they had far more of a direct impact on the outcome of the election than Russia ever could). This is about being mad that your terrible candidate lost to an equally terrible candidate. Misplaced outrage is all the rage these days. I’m mad because Candidate A will rule over me instead of Candidate B! When presented with actual evidence of manipulation at the hands of our own government, we yawn, turn on the news and wait for the talking heads to tell us how it was someone else’s fault. The latter part of this year has been filled with countless stories analyzing the release of Russia-bought ads on Facebook and were you a “victim of a misleading ad” breaking news coverage.
Back when Soviet era manipulations or more appropriately, removals, of paper editors who didn’t toe the government line was the norm, we were quick to decry that this aggression must stop – communism must be defeated! Now, meh – we don’t like your candidate, he must go, we know what is best for you. Without blinking an eye, we funneled $700,000 into Hungarian Media to oppose a candidate who doesn’t fancy our neo-con world view. But who cares, what about the latest scandal of the month?
To be sure, this is nothing new for the US, we have influenced media and elections for years in every part of the world, or more brazenly, we have just taken out a leader if we didn’t like them. Check out William Blum’s list: Overthrowing other peoples governments: The Master List. Former Secretary of State Clinton knows a thing or two about this, if you’ve already forgotten, just google “Gadaffi, Libya” for starters. Who will be next?
